TRAVEL GUIDE : NEW YORK CITY EAT.DRINK.SLEEP

ny14[twocol_one]n1[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]n[/twocol_one_last]

Maxwell x NYC Travel Guide - Part one.
Where to eat and the places to stay all from my own trips and a few lists from New Yorkers which all had pretty much the same notes so thats a good sign!

When I travel I like to think I do it well.Make the most of it and take in the city you are in and lets be honest its not like I am free to run the town and be travelling around the world all year so when it happens , it's on!

Not a hard task in the city of dreams. She has my heart.

.

ACCOMMODATION

.

For me accommodation is my thing, I need to be on top of this and I am a bit of a princess when it comes to where we stay. When I travelled Europe with my bestie who when we started said she is ok with back packing and hostels…. I embrace the city but I put my foot down with this. This does not mean you have to be splashin the cash either - Booking dot com.

My Top Stays

Crosby Street Hotel - Soho. Concierge are awesome. Let them book you dinner and live like a local. Book the black and white themed room. All room types are amazing. Very cosy feel to the whole hotel.

The Broome - Soho. Boutique hotel in the heart of Soho. If you can get the penthouse suite - larger and not that crazy in price.

The Mercer - Really cool minimal style. The Mercer and Courtyard rooms are not great so if you stay the suites and lofts are the beautiful rooms with floor boards and brick interiors but you have to pay for it.

The Ludlow - Art Deco meets Moroccan styling. Maison Martin Margiela robes to go with the most perfect bathroom. LES feels really local New York with some of the best places to eat opening up here with the cool crowd moving into this Manhattan working class area.

One Fine Stay  and Airbnb - Really live like a New Yorker here. We all know how this rolls. I am yet to travel in a group to get one of the pimpin apartments but I have heard nothing but good things.

Other Noteworthy options

The Mondrian

Your accommodation location isn't a deal breaker. You can get around New York so easily wether its the subway or Uber/cabs and you will go to all the burbs and explore everything other than where you sleep.

.

EAT / DAY

.

Pretty important notes as a girls gotta eat and you will need to stay for a while to cover it all which is fine with me. Cocktails don't go astray either and the New Yorkers can do  cocktail!

Your concierge is a great tool to use as they will book you places that the locals love. Open Table online is great for pre planning as well to make reservations ahead of time to be prepared. I am more of a see how we feel kinda girl but we did pre book a few (Buddakan and Beauty & Essex)

I have to mention WiFi is everywhere and you just ask for the password in places and you can hook into the free Wifi but if you are in cabs and walking around be sure you have the address of what you are doing with you if you have your data turned off (We didn't but you can pay for data packs to have when you travel so you don't come home to a bill bigger than your Chanel receipt).

HOME : STYLE CHOICES FOR EVERYTHING

aesop

[twocol_one]Its funny when you look at your closet which in my case it has extended out onto two racks in the bedroom and then you look at your desk and even in your bathroom cabinet and they all sync. Call me boring but I call it knowing what you want - in the zone! I also find it very easy to shop when you know what you are looking out for.

I am cleansing my space this week so there is plenty of room for some new things. I am addicted to notebooks but I do love a list so maybe thats why. I still have to write a list down to get it really clear in my head what needs to be done. Maybe its the creative side of my brain needing to see it all laid out. They also make for perfect pictures as well which is a prerequisite right? My problem is they have their photo taken and then I forget to take my list with me to wherever I was going, get home check the pretty notebook to find all the things I forgot to get. It looks good in a photo though!

[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]

Adding new things to my desk and home space is becoming a very easy feat especially that I am drawn to Scandi styling with so many brands doing rad stuff and you can buy a few things and it be under $100 so its ok. I may not need it but it all finds a cute little home. I heart Melbounre and the fab people in it so I shopped at my perfect match in a store  Simple Form and with that I keep filling the space with marble, copper, gold, black and splashes of green from my plants.

While we are on that I have a confession…. being a plant mumma has never been good for me. I think I over commit and find plants on shelves that I forgot I even had! I hit a low yesterday when I looked up on one of these mystery shelves and a plant was hanging over the side of the pot and things did not look good. By plant I mean succulent as in they survive in a desert…. but not here. I have not given up hope and water the shit out of it so we will see. I think its a no to my grand plan of a inside garden wall and growing my own herbs (to use when I don't cook). What else don't I need?

I might go to IKEA today.[/twocol_one_last]

Love Shop Share x Ballettonet - A capsule Collection of Italian made ballet flats with an edgy and minimal aesthetic.  A year in the making (I will fill you in on the process but I had to show them off first!) The seven piece collection was designed to fit into your everyday lives and make your denim look more chic than ever! As you know I am all about the girls that rock the everyday styling and wanted to bring together a range that complimented a wardrobe full of denim, leather and staples and bring a strong and sexy vibe to the traditional ballet flat.

THE RANGE

A wardrobe is not complete without some sort of animal print present. If like me you are somewhat allergic to printed clothing and rightfully so think leopard pants are a bit too far your feet can be the rebel.

I love an edgy vibe and like we all know black has a way of bringing sexy, simple and classic every time. The minimalist in me had to offer the all rounder in a suede point but added the gold tip and before you think how much of an innovator I am I have to say it is surprisingly hard to find the perfect black flat all rounder in an amazing quality, you are welcome.  As a Gemini…..or just a woman I need options so the multi strap and the lace found a place as well.

A rack overflowing with all of my most coveted pieces- My Ellery Blazer, ACNE leather jacket and of course my denim loves from JBrand and Rag & Bone. Designed to fit into a closet full of jeans, staples and a bit of black the LSS closet got the styling gig.

Thank you for checking them out and for every like, follow, comment and view. You make these projects worth every second.

I hope you love them as much as I do!

The LSS X BALLETTONET capsule collection brings my love for a simple, chic and minimal style in to a range that fits in with our denim, shirts, tee's and staples. Creating the collection for the past year with the team at Ballettonet and their Italian design house LaBaccarina who mind you have me in good company creating ranges for some of the biggest couture designer brands - only the best for us!

The beauty of Italy rich in generations of fashion and style brought together with a modern aesthetic. Simple styling, High street and designer pieces used to create our story. Its always a big call to escape from what you know and step outside your box to push your limits but I am after all the ultimate consumer and a shoe girl so I couldn't refuse!

I was spoilt for choice with the selection of Italian leathers and trimmings and with all of the creative freedom I was in my element. My only prerequisite was that they had to essentially be ballet flats - easy right?! When editing this post and the content for the launch I was like I am when I haven't seen my best friend for a few days and had way too much information to share all in the one breath.

The beautiful production from Nick Rieve captures the edge and simplicity of the range. An Italian escape colliding with a strong, confidant everyday style.

Thanks team for making it all come to life.

STREETSTYLE:ROCKING KHAKI

First to admit that the occasional (very occasional) splash of color doesn't do any harm and when I say color I mean grey and blue because they come in denim and grey well its grey, hello. I have welcomed a new tone into the 'drobe' which presents under the common headliner 'Military chic' which we are not gong to use here today and we can just call it Khaki. She mixes with the staples especially black to add a bit of a relaxed vibe to the look. On the streets of NYC it was everywhere and the girls be lookin hot even when it came in the form of a puffer coat (don't die but I have had that on my mind which is another conversation). What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas - except if you are pregnant and and stone cold sober and the stories to tell when you return are payback for having to be pregnant and stone cold sober in Vegas but what happens in NYC is fair game and goes everywhere!

I just want to talk style for a minute as someone mentioned to me they may not like New York because they would not be stylish enough in the scene but we need to take some notes before we move forward. Style is whatever you feel most at home with and thats what makes fashion so fab, the interpretation of everything we see on instagram, the glossies and on TV to make it your own. The coolest people I saw in New York and Paris and London are the high street girls. The ones that shopped at Zara, Converse and GAP and rocked jeans with maxi dresses and leather coats and a pair of hot boots. A stop at Barney's doesn't hurt of course as the token designer bag or shoes is lovely. This is why I love the beauty in the everyday as it takes more thought than looking hot in a dress straight from the lookbook and lets you be true to what you love.

I have said before but if you need a bit of direction to know naturally, without the blur of instagram feeds where you feel you want your style to go jump on ASOS and browse for a while looking at everything that catches your eye. The Recently viewed will tell you a bit about you. I have never got florals in there, bold colours and it resembles my own wardrobe as it is.  Lesson 101 over.

In other news I am almost a functioning human again after a few weeks of crack down and nearing the  launch of our capsule collection almost a year in the making! The italians know how to make shoes and we are in good company with some of my favourite fashion houses having their shoes come out of the same house as ours, pretty spesh. Still not finished the finer deets but next week its on. I will keep you posted. In the mean time Shop the Khaki edit including a perfect Michael Kors knit and I may have taken this home too - perfect coat.

INSTAGRAM: THE WEEK THAT WAS

instagramm

Rounding the week up form the world of instagram. A lot can happen in a week and only a quarter of my big movements make it to the perfectly placed and edited squares on my iPhone. Does it seem sometimes to you that if it didn't get posted on Instagram then it didn't happen? Change that thought, now and you will be a much better person. Word from wise! We need to remember that this beautiful and amazing community is not everything but a window looking in on the highlight reel as lets be honest no one puts up a crappy photo especially with all the chances to edit and perfect with photo botox or 'pho-tox' (if only the Bo in tox was as simple as an insta filter). On Monday we are shooting and filming the edit for my long awaited arrival of ballet flats straight from Italy for my collab with LaBaccarina. Watch this space (and the Insta space).

1. While at the beach house on the Mornington Penninsula , Boo one of two fur babies always by my side and keeping tabs on whats going on.She is a Lab x Cocker Spaniel and the most gentle beautiful dog. Its love.

2. This Sunday is the annual So Frenchy So Chic festival at Werribee Mansion. Who doesn't love France and Caroline de Maigret would totally approve. Tomorrow we am heading to Portsea in the rain in looks like to party with Jeep at the Jeep Grille marquee. Rain never hurt anyone right? Change of pre planned outfit and we are set.

3. Prepping for the year ahead is always tough actually as I am a last minute kind of girl but I have a few new planners and note books (here, here and luxury here) to get me motivated. Bring it on!

4. Aje tee's adding camo bling to a staple-yes please. Juts add denim cut offs and you are summer ready.

5. This post was up earlier in the week and excuse the lack of posts form then on with my crazy last minute shoot prep for Monday I am back on board more often and will a site upgrade to shop your socks off, I promise.

6. Boo tagging me again. BFF.

7.  Best sandals I have found this summer. Birks and Marants aside but talking more 'tight ass chic' but patting myself on the back hard for the leather and the price tag. It can be done!

8. Stormy days captured with the iPhone at our local before the heavens opened up.

9. #inmycalvins for Calvin Klein bringing out my inner tom boy.

THE JEWELLERY BOX

celine knot bracelet, celine, alexander mcqueen, rings, silver jewellery, stacker rings, marble bowl, marble basics, mooku, palm cuff, tag heuer watch, melbourne fashion blog, erin maxwell, photography

[twocol_one]Happy New Year! I know I am technically a day late from the official work kick off but better late than never right? So 2015 , a new year with new dreams, resolutions and big promises. I have always been a new year, new beginnings kinda gal as its the perfect chance to pep back up from the year before and all the promises you made to yourself that are yet to be done. I am guilty of having big dreams and sometimes having too many big plans at once and end up not doing them all so I am starting with one promise at a time. Bring it!

With christmas done and dusted and hopefully you came away with something you have been lusting after all year. I added to my never too full jewellery collection with a few pieces from our trip to New York (that promise I made to you of the tour of NYC is coming) I discovered some amazing local talent as I love a new kid on block even if its just on my block and they are well known in their own hood If I haven't seen it all over instagram on the 'go-to' bloggers and it girls its classed as new. My collection is separated in two parts - silver and white gold and then team yellow and rose gold just to keep decision making easy as we know thats my weakness and any extra time spent on my way out the door is precious as I am most likely already late (things to improve in 2015 number 23).

I am a firm believer in saving for the best things in my philosophy of 'Buy less, choose well' as they pay you back with the time they last and the fact that you love yourself sick when you are wearing them which I believe is what jewellery is suppose to do. Each piece has a story and when you can receive them as gifts with the wish list being left on the computer, or emailed to your loves or tell your bestie/mum/partner/dog that you love it - all about the subtlety. Even better than a gift from someone else is a gift to yourself as a pat on the back for doing something awesome which if you are like me obviously happens all the time (said with slight sarcasm) maybe best to spread the purchases out. My favourite things to wear are fine stack rings and have been doing so for a while. There is something very sexy about fine jewellery when there is a hint of a chain on your neck under your shirt or fine finer tip rings mailed with a statement cuff.  [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]

HAIR : THE KNOT

knot

[twocol_one]knot1[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]As we have seen before I am very much a top knot kinda girl in a purposeful kind of way of course. Even when its freshly blow dried and clean I just love a knot. On a shoot we did a little while ago our hair genius Angie mixed up this obsession to avoid being a one trick pony. A note to this is I have a lot less hair than Pascale which meant my knot ends up being a little tighter however never forget that hair extensions are your friend and can add instant balayage as well. Did I hear you say all rounder?

All starts with a pony tail and then start twisting and making a knot. Depending on the hair length and thickness you can work the hair around the knot. Secure with bobby pins and tuck any layers that are falling out in as much as you can so the knot is tight. I prefer this style with balayage or a lighter hair color just to be able to see the variations in color but if you are all dark I am sure its nice and shiny and healthy from the lack of bleach on it which is in your favour for a finished look. Spray on hairspray. Add shine spray and you are out.

Perfect style for the summer and if you think the old top knot gets too much of a run.

FROM THE SOURCE

whitegap

[twocol_one]When is a light blue shirt not a good option? Layered or not, paired back with any type of denim including that of the same shade which is the perfect answer to the aversion to the Double denim, what more do you want? If like me you have shirts as staples alongside the tee's it is a never ending quest for the next perfect shirt. We don't shy away from the mens department on the hunt for a new one…. shirt not a new man (I have got that covered) and why try to get a boyfriend fit when you can go straight to the source and actually have the shirt from his back.

I layer with my summer answer to my knit obsession - a knit tee which works as a the texture piece in an all white ensemble as well as the alternative to the classic white tee.

As we are nearing summer the wardrobe rework is happening while I try to hang on to my style and not get settled into denim cut offs and tshirts for every outfit. Injecting some skirts of which I will get up next week and show that summer can be about black and a minimal edgy flavour and if you are not a print and color pop kind of girl not to worry. It could also be a good chance to shake it up a little and be daring with one highlight color or monochrome prints.

We will see.  [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]whaitegap5[/twocol_one_last]

TAKING NEW CHANCES

cape

[twocol_one]I have been hesitant on the cape for a little while even after seeing it many times looking perfect on the shoulders of fashionable friends. I have added one to the mix to layer with tees, shirts and dresses. Being a blazer addict that I am I wondered if the cape had a place in the LSS wardrobe which we will see when it arrives if I can make it work as fab as those before me have. I note to not limit yourself to black which coming from me sounds mad but I can be crazy sometimes and mix with grey and shades of white too. Sass & Bide have the black and the grey covered and on sale thank you very much!  Search for capes with the terms 'blazer cape' or 'streetstyle' in the google search to not confuse Google with Superman and sexy batgirl dress ups…. which I might add if you were actually looking for a costume it is hard too and not look like a stripper, Mean Girls calls again.

[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]I posted today on Insta a hot new bag that came my way from the Perth label Morrison in an amazing navy leather which got me thinking about bags to love that are not black. I gravitate to black as it does go with EVERYTHING but navy is a nice change and then leads me over to a possible new love affair with tan or nude and a new obsession with Mansur Gavriel. Not usually a bucket bag kind of girl but hey lets give her a go. On the note of the new we also toy with the idea of some bling on the feet as I guess I love diamonds on my hands so why leave out the toes? Givenchy did some hot buckle heels and these could be my fix for the buckle love.

A lot to ponder. [/twocol_one_last]

GIVE AND TAKE

guide10

[twocol_one]A few of my favourite things that I must share in the lead up to give gifts or receive them (if we are lucky) but not reserved just for Christmas but for any occasion you feel the need to give. I don't need an excuse.

Lets start with the beauty cabinet which never seems full which is good for gift giving. Apart form the completely perfect packaging Verso Skincare is the bomb. Giving skin care is sometimes hard with skin types and issues and personal preference but its always nice to change things up from a recommendation. Can opt for travel or sample sized gifts and a voucher and they will be back to get the full sized kit.

More Mecca loves - Holiday Collection Lips de luscious | KIT Pomegranate scrub | BOBBI BROWN Brow Kit | MECCA Loved and adored pack. Again if not for the minimal and perfect package companion for me the product Grown Alchemist has me at hello!

Sentimental gifts with a story to tell and a reminder of those who gave are everything. A scent and jewellery strong winners in this category with the reminder of you when they wear them. Try an exclusive scent or even better if you know previous favourites stick to that family. Bottega Veneta Knot is beautiful as is Balmain, Narciso and Viktor & Rolf. A friend asked me a few days ago where she can buy fine jewellery for gifts and my answer swiftly was - Louise Jean | Sarah & Sebastian | Petite Grand (I die over this palm cuff)| Estelle Deve and like I say 'buy big and less often' so go all out with statement pieces like a Balenciaga bow cuff.  Can not go wrong.

Other notables are marble slabs and trays , these cool skull bookends and a lot of desk essentials from Typo, The best ever coasters and platters by RabLabs and Posters for home from Playtype, The Blacklist store and Etsy. [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]guide1[/twocol_one_last]

[twocol_one]guide[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]Back at home and on the desk a little addiction of mine is notebooks, planners and books. I always have fashion feeding through my interiors so the desk in no exception. OUI notebooks with bits of gold and personalised clutches are no brainers and the monogramming is so thoughtful and worth a pat on the back for the effort. The Daily Edited are a great stop as well as Mode Collective with the amaze  lunchy's and coin purses.

As we are year ending a year and planning for the next a diary is needed to match the above situation. An Organised Life is one of my faves or get a Scandinavian start to 2015 from a new online store I am in love with called Neutral Instinct with the 'Two Thousand Fifteen' planner.

Of course a desk, bedroom or bathroom are never complete and you can never have too many candles. The lost is long of my scented lovers but I will try and break it down.

Diptyque 'Mimosa' and  the new 34 Boulevard collection

 Tom Dixon 'Ecectic Collection'

 Bombardier Designs with ultimate personalisation

Glasshouse Fragrances with the No.5 Fleurs Musquees with the black fragmented glass a winner

Grace & James brings perfect candles and creatives together and we always love a boutique brand.

Atelier Lumira You know my feelings on black and gold. Divine!

Fashion books for the desk or coffee table are another thing that are meant to be received as gifts but a gift to yourself is always ok too. A book that needs to come every month are the fashion Bibles - Vogue, Harpers and Elle. Mag subscriptions are the gifts that keeps on giving and one of my favourites to receive. Cereal Magazine, Porter Mag and  Rush are ideas to mix up the faves.

Happy gift giving and receiving. Be safe, Be happy.

I am posting and snapping from the beach house from today so thats where you will find me, my happy place.

GREAT LENGTHS

stripegap4 stripegap

[twocol_one]stripegap2[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]I do love a longer top, well actually I never wear fitted t-shirts and most all of my tops are in a longer length. With summer rolling in and winters wardrobe being moved slightly to the back of the wardrobe I wonder about the greater lengths and donning the dress over pants look (in the relaxed street kind of way). I could get used to it. With the in between season dressing aka Melbourne acting all Gemini and not being able to make up her mind on what she wants I can't bypass the leather jacket and refuse her willingness to get along with everything around her. Soft spot for white lace simplicity with a leather number over your shoulders - chic! Add the stripes and ripped black skinny jeans and you have the perfect rotation pieces. Note that an oversized knit works in this situation as they always seem to do.

All leathers aside and in other news I have been editing like a maniac getting my travel guide up to all of you lucky beauties heading there have some new info, confirming old info and even inspire you to go and check it out for yourself, which I highly recommend. As christmas is fast approaching what would this be if I didn't add up all of my favourite things and share for not only the one day in December but suitable gifts for anytime of the year, just saying.  Up tomorrow just in time for last minute purchases even if they are a sneaky Merry Christmas to myself kind of deal I won't judge.

BEAUTY:THE KIT

chan

[twocol_one]Having your makeup done by a professional makes you see what your face has the potential to look like when made up to its max. Flawless skin, big lashes and in my case a smokey eye which Jade will agree is my thing. The flip side to looking the goods and loving yourself sick when you take the token selfie or do the last check in the mirror is 'what do I do when I am solo?' Addicted to the process and planning out which events are worthy of the time (and effort) to be glammed. I was sent off with a list from the my girl Jade so my kit at home can resemble hers so on the times between the pro I have my own back. [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]I just so happened to travel to the beauty haven which a few years ago had Aussie girls making Sephora right up there on the tourism list with The Top Of The Rock and Magnolia Bakery. Now with the exchange rate and all the boring details my spree was not as fun knowing I was not outsmarting anyone by buying everything overseas. We still go back to the mantra of choosing well and I purchased from the pre approved list and kept it under the usually excessive haul. This I add was a great way to shop if you are like me and get sidetracked in situations of choice and the perfectly placed monochrome packaging has you at hello. I also had my main items that we love and adore right here at home with Mecca Doing us proud and the savings on the beauty spree ain't what they used to be. [/twocol_one_last]

So, what is on the list from the girl that knows products and tools back to front and has had tips from the worlds best?

1. Brushes are everything! Start with good tools. These Sephora brushes came in a kit and were around $65 so this is where I am starting. The other brush I got was Becca 'The One perfecting brush'. Other notable brushes are Shu Umura and also from Mecca the Nars Kabuki Set

2. A Primer and highlighters - Laura Mercier 'Radiance Primer' is a dream. We also love Armani Fluid Sheer and Becca 'Shimmering Skin Perfector' Keeping the work in place is the hardest part and I have to admit when I cut corners and don't prep the skin I pay later. Other loves Hourglass 'Ambient Lighting Powder' .

3. Segway in to the final kit must have - The finishing powder. I heart Chanel in every aspect (yet I do not own one… still hurting from missing out on what I want) so the powders and cosmetics fill the void. Other notable finishers are Laura Mercier 'Invisible Setting powder' and Shu Uemura 'Face Architect'

4. A girls gotta have some good palettes as they are the kit all rounders. Eyeshadow options even if like me you stick to what you know. Urban Decay 'Naked Palette' is a goodie and NARSissist  Smokey Eye CompactEyebrows need to be cared for too and Benefit 'Brow-Zing gets the job done.

Happy Primping! Jade has her liners and mascara heroes next to have you covered for the party season.

INSTAGRAM:THE WEEK THAT WAS

New thing that I have decided to get happening is a weekly round up from 'The Gram' to go into more depth on the pretty little pictures on your phone. Sometimes I will talk a bit, sometimes not much at all but we will round it all up, well the best bits anyway. I have the New York Travel guide coming next week with lots of editing and even more information and recommendations than you can imagine so its taking A LOT of time so the first week back went a little like this :

insta

1.Spent the morning in the Yarra Valley with my love Milla Maxwell at the amazing Coombe Melba Estate where Dame Melba resided and left her fashionable stamp on the 73 acre estate. I neglect the Yarra Valley being only an hour away and I will be heading here much more ofter from now on. Thanks to the Two Hands Agency team and Coombe for having us.

2. New pieces - My TAG watch given from Nick after he retired to thank me for my support (not needed, its my job) . I finally found one of these beautiful Celine knot cuffs and went across the world to get it!

3. Holiday hair by my babe Angie at Boda Haircutters - keeping me fresh after some cold and drying weather in NYC.

4. Saw what we will be wearing for Autumn/Winter 2015 from Wittner. Ankle boots with a higher rise, Steel grey and burgundy color pops, patent black leather brogues and these laced pumps. Just have to get through summer now. Bring on the chill.

5. One of my great loves makes a rare appearance. We fed the sparrows in fed square waiting for our ride after the day at the amazing Coombe estate. 'Most awesome day ever' after riding on a bus for the first time! Simple things.

You asked where her hat was from - You can get it from Culture Kings or just search ebay for New Era infant caps.

6. Congrats to Emma who scored a $500 Scanlan Theodore gift voucher with thanks from AMEX and Shop Small Walks. Jealous!

7. My Uniform and I like it! White shirts are life. These boyfriends are must haves. Soft denim and the rips wear so well the more you wash.

8. Editing my New York journal and missing even the cold wet streets of this amazing city.

9. Investments. Acne Leather 'Mape' my jacket of choice after much consideration. Choose well, buy less is my moto and I am sticking by it.

INTERIORS: THE APARTMENT BY THE LINE

"Our vision stems from a desire to pare back, strip down, and pull together—the search for refined, versatile, and honest goods. Built to last but never boring, these things are a mix of established favorites and our latest finds from emerging names across fashion, home, and beauty. They are “quintessential,” a slippery term with a broad scope. Discover storied objects united by their staying power and the intention of their making, and see how they work together in the context of a carefully considered life as you contemplate: What is Quintessential?" - The Line

lined

[twocol_one]There are certain sites and instagram accounts that just make you always come back for more and inspire your style in a lot of ways. The Line is one of those sites for me with the aesthetic exactly how I would do things and in SoHo none the less. When we headed to New York I had places on my list that I needed to visit and none of which would be on a tourist check list but rather doing New York like a New Yorker. Hidden cafe's, Lower East Side haunts and visiting friends on 80th in the Upper East side. All of my travels documented and a visual diary on its way so when you travel to my dream city you can do it like the locals do.

The Apartment by the Line was at the top of my list of appointments and every minute of my visit was all I knew it would be. The amazing Greene St second level loft is essentially a store with everything you are lusting over when you enter able to come home with you to start your very own perfect apartment. Brilliant really.  [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last] Hard not to make a purchase unless you are so busy capturing the beauty of the high ceilings , the free standing bath with dream products waiting on the ledge including Mason pearson hair brushes and  this is before I walked through the robe. Gabriela Artigas jewellery, Proenza denim and Knitwear perfection by Soyer and Vince to line the closet.Simple, chic, relaxed and neutral toned pallets are the essence of the apartment and as I leave I picture myself drinking my morning coffee on the terrace before I have a bath and watch the Streets of SoHo from my window. On my way out to somewhere fabulous I grab my Toteme coat  from the hook and pair my NewbarK slides back with my ripped boyfriend jeans. Heaven. Dreaming…. but thats ok. We are after all in the city of dreams.

THE PIECES AHEAD

new look

The weather report from home is a little bit different to here and as you know I am a lover of winter and when I am feeling like a change the start of Autumn is good for me too. The thing is I love to layer and I am not that much of a mini skirt or above the knee fan unless there is room for an oversized cardi or coat to balance out the short lengths - I'm so classy! My exception is the denim short because denim is my fashion hero and if you size up and have them free fitting they can be the perfect casual layer.

Back to the point I was making about what was coming and I have two colours that you need to inject into your life… Camel and Khaki. Both amazing with denim and a white tee and both fit as a neutral alongside navy with the right amount of pep to add with the endless black.

On the streets of NYC these colours were everywhere! Military minimal chic with Khaki duster coats and blazers and the warmer tones of camel in amazing knits and cashmere sweaters. I may have got this cardi and if you do yourself one favour then you should get it too. Its love!

[twocol_one]Yes I am alive! A little bit of vacation time for us in New York which I must say is complete heaven. I may have been mentioning (plotting, annoyingly pushing, dreaming) that the Maxwell team should move here… sooner rather than later. If I am successful you will be the first to know. Whilst here I have been in the hub of fashion and I am proud to say that us Aussies hold out own in the fashion stakes but will give myself a notable leave pass with the temp dropping to around 3 degrees some days which is just insane for this Melbourne girl so jackets and scarves and well pretty much anything that will stop hypothermia (mild hypochondria). I thought coming from the city of four season's in a day could hold her own here but its testing me! Do not despair as I have some additions you need for the next season including something that should already be there -The humble white shirt.[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]

The thing with fashion is that we can wear the same things but manage to look so different. I believe it's a little thing called style. A tuck here and there, some layering or the fit of your favourite basics are what make your look personal to you. This shirt dress, after a tucked away collar and front can hold its own as a shirt.Paired with jeans so the party is at the back and when you change into your leather pants and add a blazer let the tuck be free. The perfect additions to your everyday staples are a belt, of the wide high waisted variety and a hot pair of heels.  I love layering and some length in my under layers is good for me! It has been serving me well in the cold snap I have here but as always doing Melbourne proud in the fashion stakes. [/twocol_one_last]

WHAT MAKES IT INTO CARRY ON?

BAGING

Does everyone else spend every day thinking about their next trip? NYC is all I have thought about since we booked flights 3 months ago and the closer I got, the farther away I was. Day one, arrive at the airport. I am told that the flight I claim to be on does not exist. Hmmm, excuse me? How dare you delay my New York dream! Get me on that plane right away…please…What a balls up that was. Day two, let's try this again. "I'm sorry Mrs Maxwell but your travel agent has stuffed up your visa into the US. You won't be going today!" As I fight back tears I get day three planned and I'm out of there. As I said, the closer you get…. So now, after two false starts I am off to the city of my dreams. Months of planning….Beats ready to take me to another place….Shopping list that I can't afford but still write, just in case. Here we go. We are coming NYC.

GUIDE:LITTLE BLACK BOOKMARK

computer computer1

[twocol_one]Are you a creature of habit?  Nothing wrong with that and I always say if you're on a good thing stick with it.  I buy my favourite pieces in multiple colours and I shop at stores that I have locked down over the years in my little black bookmark.  All depending on what I am adding to the collection or if a certain item is to be checked off the list my tabs of shops are at the ready.  It's a tight list and will make you shop like a superstar.

I firstly introduce you to the Queen of the searches Shopstyle.  She is full of options and when things get specific she makes for your credits cards best friend, kind of like Google for fashion. If you have something specific in mind you just search and then bag the best price and option all in a few minutes.  The designer hit list - Farfetch is the best place for designer and boutique labels which are shipped directly  from stores in small towns. A Saint Laurent cuff from Parma,Italy or Givenchy from Miami you will be trawling 300+ of the worlds best for hours.  Vintage Chanel anyone?  If you love a bargain (who doesn't)  then hit up The Outnet. Everything at least 40% off with denim a great buy alongside Marant, Wang and Lim. Check in Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for the new drops for best size and color options.

With every good piece of designer comes the need for a clever induction of High Street.  Asos is a treasure trove of options you just need to be clear about your style, your event and what you already own as another poly black blazer isn't needed if you invested in wool.  When I am searching Asos I know that I am clear about my style as after a few clicks my history at the bottom of the page looks  like my instagram feed.  Asos branded Ridley jeans are amazing as is Monki for black or white pieces.  Topshop is much the same for hitting the win if you care to look.  The thing about cheaper materials is that for times you will be sitting a bit or have to go the distance Polyester is more like Kim Kardashian in her man made, botox perfected self without a wrinkle in sight.  Unlike her natural sister silk more like Miranda Kerr, it's classy and expensive but doesn't go the distance out all night at Tao in Vegas.   [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]computer7[/twocol_one_last]

[twocol_one]Interior lusting as I dream of whats next to come. A new house, move overseas, renovate some more and stay put?I know that our vacay will be as close as I will get to being a New Yorker for a while but hey who knows who we might meet- If you are out there holla back! Melbourne is such a perfect city especially that we have almost ended the best week of the year with the Spring Racing carnival and all of the Christmas parties are coming closer but I can't help getting lost in Euro summers and Scandinavian real estate websites and think 'Is the grass always greener?' I am prepared to take that chance to find out. Reality as it seems may see us here for a little while longer so its Tumblr and Stadshem all the way for me.boo hoo. [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]I will keep up the reno here with a trip to IKEA in between my fancy week of racing and drinking cocktails to tend to the floordrobe at home and get a new rack set up to start planning and packing for our trip which is a post on its own and I will of course share what makes the NYC cut. I will remember my mantra of Buy less, Choose better and may not (as in most likely will) bring back the second case.  Back to the topic of home. I am obsessed with string lights and mine will get their home as soon as I learn (or get my brother/workhorse/handyman) to plaster screw yet another 6 holes in the wall. Again I stress if you are a Gemini do not redecorate on your own as there are only so many walls to put holes in and change your mind on placement - poster anyone?  [/twocol_one_last]

SHOP SMALL WALK

ae1

ae5[twocol_one]ae3[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]I am a massive online shopper (addict? Hi my name is Erin Maxwell). I know its been a while when go to a store and I am just browsing I can get a little lost and side tracked and fall back on instagram to get a bit of outfit inspo. Memo number one - The girls that work in store are walking, talking, real life instagram posts decked out and styled in the brands best.I know it's ground breaking! The old pounding the pavement should never be forgotten. I love a day hitting a local shopping strip with fashion, homewares and beauty  all to be visited while you are practically doing your daily exercise. Of course the cafe stop along the way to refuel is a must, we don't want to burn out before we finish for the rest of the street.

Together with American Express I chose my favourite spot in Melbourne to shop and spent the day exploring all it had to offer.       The campaign - 'Shop Small Walk' where we remind everyone that our local Aussie stores need love too and there is nothing quite like being in store for inspiration and old fashioned conversation and customer service. My hood was boutique heaven- High street Armadale with Josh Goot, Scanlan & Theodore, Aesop and the cafe of your dreams in the mix.

My map is live now along with some of Australia's best style influencers who have got you covered for local shopping all over our amazingly fab Australian cities. As Melbourne is Australia's most fashionable town the lists of shopping haunts are amazing.

As I am one to think of others during my day of shopping and eating (and exercising) I did the right thing and picked up a gift for someone lucky as well. Check out my map and take note and I will be back to you to shower you with gifts.

THE RULES

DERBY

[twocol_one]Talk about last minute for a week of Flemington fashion that I knew a year ago that I would be attending. This seems to be a trend with me and I guess it's a bit like unplanned nights out or fleeting holidays, they are always the best times. So heres to pulling together a weeks worth of fashion in a few days with express shipping my best friend or god forbid a trip to an actual store! Not for a second if you are also in this situation should you be freaking out, plenty of options and with a few rules to live by we will be fine.

The first day of the Carnival and naturally my favourite with the tradition being all things black and white- easy! My rules for all of the races and race wear events through the week are as follows : Keep the hemlines just under the knee or if above the knee make them structured and A-line, not only is it the most flattering length but when the Melbourne weather offers 4 seasons in one day the attempt to literally hold onto your hats, your clutch and then your cute floaty skirt as well may prove to be a challenging task. The midi skirt trend is happening so there are plenty of options from pencil to ball skirt which I am privy to both. I like a balancing act with races outfits as in if the skirts full give your waist some shape with a tucked in top or belted situation and with the slim pencil shape get some volume and structure through the top half of the look. Comprende? [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]With all of this said I have my last rule that I will stick by all week and that is do your own thing and stick to your personal style. If you don't like florals don't wear them just because Oaks day calls for lady like glamour. I am of course a lady and on my way (thanks to my Parisian sisters) to be as chic as all hell but my lady like style leans more to black lace or a structured jacket and pant combo with a bold lip and layered fine jewellery. Each to their own. I think that true style comes when you are pulling things from a few different brands and making accessories work hard. There is a lot more room for flavour when you scour the pages or racks (if thats your thing) for the pieces that catch your eye and trends filter from Chanel all the way to Asos so budget doesn't stop anyone from styling looks. If all four days are on the cards for you and like me prefer to buy jeans and shirts over dresses and headwear Asos and Topshop chic is always a good idea.

Don't be afraid to get your DIY on either. Mimco and Asos (Inside info, I have this) have options to build on to make what suits. A hair clip or headband to start and add the mesh veil on top or a piece of beautiful lace. If you can justify my favourite headwear designer is Nerida Winter with her hats the only ones that I think could work for my style. Edgy fascinators ticking my boxes. See you there. [twocol_one]If like me you are long time lover of a stripe you will be excited about the abundance of options a girl has when choosing how she wears her beloved stripe. Of course the good old Breton Stripe top is still a good choice, straight from the riviera and most commonly instagrams perfect match with your denim everything. The sexy, more chic and polished upgrade is the Pin Stripe. To make sure you are more street than office mix the pieces in with other favourites so a tailored pant with a white tee and leather jacket or an oversized pinstripe shirt with boyfriend jeans and a hot pair of heels. The one you see in a few of the images is ZARA and is in store now or over on ebay. [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]Are you brave? double up your stripes with co-ords. A soft, free flow wide leg pant with a matching strapless or spaghetti strap top is subtle and something you would be less likely see at the photocopy machine but rather at the post work Friday sesh. The ladies over at Bec & Bridge nailed the twin set with the Sunseeker combo which I have and love (and BTW have a pair of the pants for sale in my store) and I am in love with Shona Joy's culotte option too.

My tips which always apply in my rule book are if you are borrowing from the boyfriend pair back with something from your own side so an oversized shirt with skinny jeans or blazer with a floaty skirt and a tee - you get the drift. Basically stripes are always a good option and are the perfect print when you don't do a print to break up the black, white and grey staples.  [/twocol_one_last]

OUT IN THE CITY

sab6

[twocol_one]Over the weekend I kicked off the spring racing carnival at the Caulfield Cup which gave me a wake up call that yes the week long celebrating of all things horses and fashion is just around the corner. I better get my self organised for the seemingly endless amounts of looks that have to come together to be race ready. I am a traditional girl when attending the races in that I get all memo's of no short skirts, indecent exposure of certain areas and always have something on your head. Its convenient that I never really dress like I am going to a nightclub even on the rare occasion that I am in a night club. I am all about the midi and just received my 'How to be Parisian' guide so with these tools I shall be Flemington chic.

Along with the rules stated there are themes for each day in which this self confessed monochrome lover sometimes has to make her own in particular on Oaks Day my girly girl gene is absent with florals and frills some what M.I.A - permanently….. only giving them a slight chance if they are of the muted color variety. The piece that will work for me is the pleat midi. Girly and soft enough yet edgy and structured at the same time.  [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]Last week I made my way to Melbourne's heart beat for fashion, Collins street and headed to Collins 234 to style a look as a part of the 'Style To Inspire' competition. Bloggers and fashion girls this is for you - For you're chance to win a $500 spending spree at Collins 234 and also interview a Melbourne designer and be published on the Collins 234 website just head into Collins234 and find your best race looks, share on your blog or socials and you are in the mix.

My look was from Saba with this amazing coated pleat midi skirt (ticking a box) and these hot fringed heels from Mollini. I am a shoe girl and if I am going to mix up my outfit its always with a statement shoe. Being a more minimal dresser I lean more towards a face net or headband esq piece rather than a big piece of millinery. This takes me to my number one rule for racing and I guess any event with a dress code - Be yourself, be comfortable as confidence and individuality are the best accessory. Have a bit of fun with your outfits and use belts and statement shoes as a way to tie in your head wear so you look complete and styled. [/twocol_one_last] sab1 sab3 sab5

[twocol_one]Firstly sorry about the absence here I was in Bali relaxing and celebrating my friends beautiful wedding. A surprise even to myself is that my laptop was turned on once in 5 days! Shut the front door! In the time away however I have some amazing things to share with you from the best shirt dress ever to an editorial with my girls Jade and Angie with headwear you want to wear this spring carnival. Watch this space. [/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]To the shopping. A trend I saw a while ago and like always took me a little time to feel if it was one that I was going to rock and with trying a few and doing a bit of research I am all in and can't wait to have some weather nice enough to wear them. I am talking about the humble culotte, A piece Leandra has sitting pretty right up there with her man repelling best. I will be switching between a slide and heeled sandal with my trusty tee or shirt finishing things off. I would also be happy with a blazer, done up and bra optional. [/twocol_one_last]

PERFECTING LIPS

Do you ever fear the effort of a red lip? The bleeding, the old lipstick on the teeth or simply choosing the wrong color? Ahead of the crazy season of races, christmas parties and keeping fresh looks for summer Jade will show you the way and letting the cat out of the bag with a wonder product from her makeup case. You're welcome!

Every woman looks Amazing with makeup and it's just about focusing on one thing and not going crazy on it all.Wether a smokey eye or a chic red lip you just need to make your decision and  stick with what suits you best.

A red lip is timeless and no matter what era, it is always in fashion....if done right of course. When applying a red lip there are two things to keep in mind - Your skin and to prep your lips so they look well moisturised and not flakey or dry. My tips on how to achieve this are simple. Make sure before applying any red lippy or perfecting your skin and foundation that you apply moisture to the lip eg Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream (staple in any makeup kit) and if you already have dry lips simply get a toothbrush apply some of the cream to your lips and lightly brush as this acts as a gentle exfoliator that will remove any dead or dry skin and rejuvinates the lip while you can focus on skin before coming back to perfect the red lip .

It's imperative to get your skin looking flawless by prepping skin with a great moisturiser and then applying foundation .Make sure all spots and under eyes circles are covered and concealed. Makeup forever Paris foundation or Armani's luminous silk are always a good coverage and Benefit's erase paste gets rid of any sleepless dark circles under the eyes.

When applying a strong  red lip I often get clients saying they can't seem to find the right red shades. For me it's a simple rule ,if you have porcelain fair skin it's often better going for a more blue red tone like MAC Ruby Woo or if you have an olive more tanned complexion to go for a more orange vibrant red shade like Nars Dragon Girl or even mixing in some of the YSL red shades that are very warm and orange based.

In order for a strong red lip to stay put all day and night I suggest to firstly line the lips with a pencil. I love NARS lip pencils as they are a lipstick and pencil in one. You can also use the same blue or orange based colour in a lip pencil shade. Applying translucent powder around the lip will also eradicate any bleeding before applying lipstick.

So now you have your flawless skin and amazing red lips you are left with one equally important thing for me and that is cheeks. I often see this is where a lot of clients can go wrong when applying at home. It's better to contour with a Matt bronzer and achieve a more bronzed cheek than applying pink blush as it can appear very dated. Your skin tone will determine the intensity of your cheek but I love a peachy bronzed cheek with a red lip and flawless skin which is perfect as we head into summer .

SHOW SOME, COVER SOME

nj

We all know the rules of show a bit of something and cover something else up but there are so many ways to work the rules. It all depends on your personal style and personal rules that start you off. I don't love a mini skirt and am very privy to a midi with a higher waist so I am able to show a bit more chest or have a sleeveless top in the mix. This is all very easy when we can layer and wear amazing wools and bonded materials where showing a lot of skin isn't an option. Summer is my challenge but I will be sure that oversized shirts with denim shorts will pair up and cotton midi's with tees will all be friends. This is another story.

In other news in between lunch dates at Crown and day spa filled afternoons I am last minute shopping for a cocktail function on Friday, this is the challenge bigger than oversized shirts for the girl that loves denim and seems to be allergic to bright pretty dresses. I will get back to you on this one and have a the down low on the best finds for races as my style is quite racing friendly with preferred hem lines and structure and detail over sparkle. Watch this space.
